On Saturday 1 August 2009, Arsenal Football Club announced that they had smashed their fundraising target for the 2008/09 Charity of the Season Teenage Cancer Trust by raising a total of £532,816 throughout the partnership
This record amount raised smashes all previous fundraising totals for Arsenal’s Charity of the Season initiative and is thanks to the overwhelming support from Arsenal’s local and global supporters, players, directors and staff of the Club.
Teenage Cancer Trust, a charity dedicated to improving the lives of young people with cancer, was launched as Arsenal’s Charity of the Season in August 2008 when the Club pledged to raise £300,000 during the course of the partnership to fund an Education Zone within a brand new Day Care Centre, due to commence construction in 2010.
Following from TreeHouse, Arsenal’s Charity of the Season in 2007/2008, Teenage Cancer Trust adopted the ‘Be a Gooner. Be a Giver.’ campaign throughout the season, which saw many innovative fundraising events and initiatives including the first ever fun-run held at Emirates Stadium and the first involvement from a Club sponsor – Citroen – who donated a C4 for raffle to the partnership.

21 August 2008 ARSENE, CESC FABREGAS, MANUEL ALMUNIA AND FAYE WHITE LAUNCH PARTNERSHIP WITH TEENAGE CANCER TRUST
Arsenal stars Cesc Fabregas and Manuel Almunia joined Manager Arsène Wenger Arsenal Ladies star Faye White at the Teenage Cancer Trust unit in University College Hospital in central London to announce the partnership between the charity and Arsenal and launch the fundraising target of a massive £300,00. The foursome met teenage cancer patients, nurses, doctors and staff.
13 November 2008 THEO WALCOTT VISITS TEENAGE CANCER TRUST UNIT AT UNIVERSITY COLLEGE HOSPITAL
Arsenal Football Club’s 19 year-old, Theo Walcott paid a visit to Teenage Cancer Trust’s unit at University College Hospital on Thursday 13 November to meet teenage cancer patients who are being treated on the charity’s unit.
2 December 2008 ARSENAL STARS FILM ‘DO WHAT I SAY’ FILM FOR CHARITY OF THE SEASON
Arsenal players participated in a short promotional film alongside teenagers with cancer. The light hearted advert, entitled ‘Do What I Say’, reflects the players’ support for young people with cancer. The Gunners stars appear in funny scenarios doing whatever the teenagers want them to do. The advert was created and shot by the agency, brothers and sisters and includes a voiceover by British comedian and Arsenal fan Matt Lucas.

Arsenal players brought Christmas cheer to young cancer patients when they paid a surprise visit to Teenage Cancer Trust’s unit at UCH, London on Tuesday. Emmanuel Adebayor, Robin van Persie, Samir Nasri, Kolo Toure, Mikael Silvestre, Denilson, Carlos Vela, Emmanuel Eboue and Alex Song delivered sacks of presents to the patients and chatted with them throughout the afternoon.
21 December 2008 ARSENAL’S DEDICATED MATCHDAY RAISES OVER £200,000 FOR TEENAGE CANCER TRUST
Arsenal skipper, Cesc Fabregas and goalkeeper Manuel Almunia pulled a Christmas cracker unleashing over £200,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust. The money raised at the dedicated matchday against Liverpool (Sunday, December 21st) saw players, directors and many of the Club’s staff donate a day’s wages in aid of the ‘Be a Gooner. Arsene Wenger joined world famous cartoonist Gerald Scarfe to unveil a uniquely designed Citroën C4 which was raffled in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust.
The ‘Ultimate Arsenal Fans’ Car’ was designed by Scarfe, whose diverse range of work includes designing and directing the animation for Pink Floyd's ‘The Wall’ as well as gracing theatre sets and magazines across the globe. Arsenal players Robin van Persie, Gael Clichy and Manuel Almunia met with the cartoonist back in January to discuss their ideas for the car which Gerald interpreted in his inimitable style.

Arsenal Supporters Club ‘Arsenal Herts &Beds’ successfully created eight one-off clay foot imprints from Arsenal legends and current first team players which went under the hammer via a dedicated website with all successful bids going directly to Arsenal’s Charity of the Season, Teenage Cancer Trust.
3 May 2009 BE A GUNNER. BE A RUNNER. RAISES OVER £28,000 FOR TEENAGE CANCER TRUST
Emirates Stadium hosted its first ever fun-run for Arsenal’s Charity of the Season, Teenage Cancer Trust which raised over £28,000 for the charity which helps young people fight cancer.
Over 140 runners took part in the ten-lap (6.4 kilometre) run around the home of the Gunners. They were joined by a celebrity team of fellow Arsenal fans formed of Olympic gold medallist Denise Lewis, comedians Paul Kaye and Rory McGrath, actor David Harewood and former boxer Michael Watson.
20 May 2009 MANUEL ALMUNIA SURPRISES TEENAGE CANCER PATIENT
Young Arsenal fan, Arnie Higgs’ dream came true when he was paid a surprise visit by his favourite player, the Club’s goalkeeper, Manuel Almunia, to help celebrate his 14th birthday. Arnie Higgs, from Basildon, was having chemotherapy at Teenage Cancer Trust’s unit at University College Hospital in London for a rare brain tumour.
21 May 2009 LEGENDS &YOUTH BALL RAISES RECORD AMOUNT
The ‘Legends &Youth Ball’ hosted by Matt Lucas and attended by the Arsenal first team squad, Arsène Wenger and Arsenal-supporting celebrities raised over £200,000 through unique auction lots and generous pledges from guests throughout the evening.

This record amount raised smashes all previous fundraising totals for Arsenal’s Charity of the Season initiative and is thanks to the overwhelming support from Arsenal’s local and global supporters, players, directors and staff of the Club.
North London charity TreeHouse, the national charity for autism education, was launched as Arsenal’s Charity of the Season in August 2007 when the Club pledged to raise £250,000 during the course of the partnership to fund sports facilities within their new National Centre for Autism Education. The Centre’s construction commenced in April 2007, and with help from Arsenal, the building will be ready to house TreeHouse pupils, teachers and staff in time for the new school year commencing in September 2008.
Arsenal and TreeHouse launched the ‘Be a Gooner. Be a Giver’ campaign ahead of Arsenal’s 2007/08 fixture against Chelsea at Emirates Stadium which doubled up as TreeHouse’s dedicated matchday. The campaign aimed to engage Arsenal’s global family of supporters led by all first team players and directors donating a day’s wages to TreeHouse. Supporters were encouraged to join and donate what they could, and an impressive £140,000 was raised in just one day.

23rd August 2007 ARSENE, GILBERTO AND CLICHY LAUNCH PARTNERSHIP WITH TREEHOUSE
Arsenal stars Gilberto and Gael Clichy joined Manager Arsène Wenger at TreeHouse School in Muswell Hill, north London, to announce the partnership between TreeHouse and Arsenal and launch the fundraising target of a massive £250,000. The threesome met TreeHouse pupils, teachers and staff.
Arsenal also announce that the Club and charity are discussing jointly delivering autism information and training to schools and creating inclusive sports opportunities for youngsters with autism.
7th December 2007 ARSENAL STARS CREATE ‘POCKETS’ FILM FOR TREEHOUSE
Starring six of Arsenal’s first team and Manager Arsène Wenger, acting hats were put on as CHI&Partners came to the Arsenal Training Ground to film ‘Pockets’, a promotional video for ‘Be a Gooner. Be a Giver’. Looking to create a quirky, fun and lighthearted short film highlighting that Arsenal’s players and directors were all ‘putting their hands in their pockets’ for TreeHouse, the film proved enjoyable to film, and even more enjoyable to watch.
Players involved included William Gallas, Gael Clichy, Cesc Fabregas, Manuel Almunia, Theo Walcott and Nicklas Bendtner. The film was regularly shown on Arsenal TV upon the channels launch in February 2008 and on the matchday screens every half time at Emirates Stadium from 18th December 2007. 13th December 2007 ADEBAYOR VISITS TREEHOUSE
Emmanuel Adebayor took a trip to TreeHouse to meet and spend time with pupils of the School for an afternoon. Emmanuel took Arsenal gifts for the children and joined them in the playground for some football and games. Imagery from the day made the cover of the Arsenal v Chelsea matchday programme.
27th February 2008 MARATHON RUNNERS MEET CLICHY AND ALMUNIA
Six lucky Arsenal supporters running the Flora London Marathon for TreeHouse came to Emirates Stadium for a bit of moral support with their Marathon training from Arsenal stars Manuel Almunia and Gael Clichy.
The six Gooners had a tour of the Stadium and then were presented with ‘Be a Gooner. Be a Giver’ signed t-shirts by the Arsenal duo.
19th April 2008 SUPPORTERS CLUBS PRESENT TREEHOUSE WITH £11,200
At Arsenal’s Premier League fixture against Reading at Emirates Stadium, seven of Arsenal’s Supporters Clubs, from all over the UK and Ireland presented Arsenal’s Charity of the Season TreeHouse, with a massive £11,200.
Nick Hornby, popular author, Arsenal supporter and TreeHouse founder was at Emirates Stadium to receive the cheque on behalf of the charity from representatives from each of the Supporters Clubs as shown. The money was raised through various different initiatives throughout the season so far including poker nights, raffles and auctions.
30th April 2008 BOWLING WITH DENILSON
Arsenal midfielder Denilson joined 8 pupils from TreeHouse for a game of ten pin bowls at Rowan’s Bowling Alley in Finsbury Park. The youngsters, accompanied by their carers, visited the Alley for an afternoon, enjoying the company and bowling skills of the 20 year-old Brazilian maestro.
The experience proved memorable for all those involved, and was a great learning exercise for the TreeHouse pupils. TreeHouse take every opportunity to expose the children to new environments so that they can learn new leisure skills, adapt to new environments and address their communication and behavioural needs.
15th JUNE 2008 POCKETS WINS A CANNES FILM LION NOMINATION
‘Pockets’, the promotional video for Arsenal’s Charity of the Season, TreeHouse starring Arsène Wenger and several Arsenal players was shortlisted for a Cannes Film Lion at Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival. The short film, produced and directed by advertising agency CHI &Partners was shot at Arsenal’s Training Ground and remarkably took less than six hours to shoot.
The esteemed Festival, renowned for rewarding the most creative work produced as part of advertising and communication campaigns, hosted four awards ceremonies this year during the six-day period and while ‘Pockets’ didn’t scoop a prize, being shortlisted within the Fundraising and Appeals category is a massive achievement for everyone involved with the project.
